Warm-up Questions

When you hear the phrase “revive extinct animals,” what animals do you think of first?
Do you think bringing back extinct animals is mainly about science, conservation, or entertainment? Why?

The Real Reason We Should Revive Extinct Animals

Deextinction: what it is and the three main methods (00:00 – 08:27)

Transcript will load here…

1. What does the speaker say is the biggest “huge, if true” point of deextinction science?

Rebuilding theme parks with dinosaurs
Proving Jurassic Park was scientifically accurate
Making exact replicas of extinct animals
What the technology could mean for animals alive today

2. Why is cloning an extinct animal usually not possible?

Because the clone would always be a different species
Because scientists refuse to use egg cells
Because DNA can never be recovered from any dead animal
Because cloning requires a whole living cell, not just DNA

3. According to the speaker, why can’t we bring back dinosaurs right now?

They never existed
Their bones are too heavy to clone
Too much time has passed and their DNA is too fragmented
There are no close living relatives

The Real Reason We Should Revive Extinct Animals

Genetic rescue: using the same tools to prevent extinctions (08:27 – 11:06)

Transcript will load here…

1. What is “genetic rescue” in the video?

Freezing animals in ice to preserve them
Training predators to hunt again
Moving animals to zoos to protect them
Using genetics tools to help species not go extinct

2. What problem do the black-footed ferrets have, according to the speaker?

They have very low genetic diversity (a small gene pool)
They are overpopulating and harming ecosystems
They are hunted for their fur
They have no habitat left anywhere on Earth

3. In the cane toad example, what difference can determine survival?

Learning to avoid eating at night
A whole new set of chromosomes
Growing a thicker fur coat
One single letter of genetic code

The Real Reason We Should Revive Extinct Animals

Tasmanian tiger: ecosystems, risks, and the ethical debate (11:06 – 15:50)

Transcript will load here…

1. What happened in Tasmania after the Tasmanian tiger disappeared, according to the speaker?

There was an explosion of wallabies and kangaroos affecting the landscape and other species
Dinosaurs returned to the island
The ecosystem stayed perfectly balanced
The climate instantly became colder

2. Why does the speaker say editing “1%” of DNA is still a big challenge?

Because it is illegal to edit any DNA at all
Because 1% changes are always harmless and easy
Because 1% is actually a lot genetically and could take a very long time
Because computers cannot measure percentages correctly

3. What does the speaker say we must be careful about when discussing this technology?

It can only be used for extinct birds
We are manipulating billions of years of evolution and there are huge ethical and environmental stakes
The main risk is that animals will become too friendly
The only issue is that headlines might be boring

The Real Reason We Should Revive Extinct Animals

Transcript will load here…

1. Which statement best matches the video’s overall message?

Deextinction tools matter because they could also help conserve living species
Deextinction is impossible and will never work in any form
Deextinction is mainly about making exact copies of extinct animals for museums
Cloning is the only method scientists use for deextinction

2. What is the video’s view on animals brought back through gene editing (e.g., “direwolves”)?

They will be identical in every way to the original extinct animals
They can resemble extinct animals, but they won’t be exact replicas
They can only be created using dinosaur DNA
They will always be robots, not animals

3. What kind of debate does the speaker emphasize at the end?

A debate about what responsibility humans have for the world we created
A debate about whether cloning is cheaper than gene editing
A debate about whether cages are better than forests
A debate about which extinct animal is coolest

Discussion Questions

Discuss the ideas from this video

The Real Reason We Should Revive Extinct Animals

Do you agree that “deextinction science is conservation science”? Why or why not?
Which method (back breeding, cloning, gene editing) seems most realistic to you, and what worries you most about it?
Is it acceptable to edit a species to be poison-resistant or disease-resistant? Where should the limits be?
If humans caused an extinction, do we have a responsibility to try to restore the ecosystem (for example, by bringing back an apex predator)?
