Past Simple vs. Present Perfect
Discover the difference between the two tenses
Let’s start by looking at these sentences.
- Leonardo da Vinci painted the Mona Lisa.
- I visited Japan in 2019.
- She finished her homework two hours ago.
What do these actions have in common?
That’s right! The Past Simple tells us about completed events.
Think again. The actions are over. Try again!
Now, look at this second group of sentences.
- I have lost my keys. (The result is I can’t get in my house now).
- She has lived here for ten years. (She still lives here).
- Have you ever eaten sushi? (In your entire life up to now).
How are these actions different from the first group?
Perfect! These actions connect to the present.
Not quite. The important thing is their connection to now. Give it another try!
Let’s look at two sentences side-by-side to see the difference clearly.
- Sentence A: I lived in Paris for 3 years.
- Sentence B: I have lived in Paris for 3 years.
In which sentence does the person still live in Paris now?
Exactly! “Have lived” means the action continues to the present.
Good try, but “lived” (Past Simple) implies the action is over.
