Look at this short story.
- Yesterday, I saw a dog in the park. The dog was chasing a ball.
Why does the article change from “a” to “the”?
That’s right! The first time we mention the dog, it’s new information, so we use “a”. The second time, the listener knows which dog we mean, so we use “the”.

- She bought a sandwich and a drink for lunch. The sandwich was delicious.

Now, let’s look at a related rule. Sometimes we use “the” for something that hasn’t been mentioned before.
