Verb Patterns
The main verb in a sentence determines whether the following verb should be a gerund (-ing) or an infinitive (to + verb). Unfortunately, there is no magic rule; these patterns must be learned and memorized.
Verbs followed by a Gerund often describe finishing, starting, or feelings about an activity.
e.g., enjoy, hate, finish, quit, avoid, suggest, recommend, mind
Verbs followed by an Infinitive often describe future plans, intentions, or decisions.
e.g., want, hope, need, decide, plan, promise, offer, agree, refuse
